Bora Bora & Tahiti: A Honeymoon Planner's Guide

From overwater bungalows to inter-island flights — what every couple should know before planning a French Polynesia honeymoon.

French Polynesia has a way of resetting your sense of what a honeymoon can be. Turquoise lagoons, volcanic peaks rising from the ocean, and overwater bungalows that feel almost unreal — it is the destination couples dream about long before they book. But the islands reward preparation. The right itinerary, the right resort, and the right timing make the difference between a beautiful trip and the trip you will talk about for decades.

At Hermes Travel, we have planned countless honeymoons across Tahiti, Moorea, and Bora Bora. As a Certified Tahiti Specialist®, we work directly with the islands' top resorts and know which properties suit quiet romance, adventure, or a blend of both.

When to Go

May through October is the dry season — lower humidity, calmer seas, and the best conditions for snorkeling and lagoon excursions. December through March brings warmer rains; showers are often brief, and the landscape is lush. Shoulder months like April and November can offer excellent value with fewer crowds.

If your wedding falls in peak winter (December–January), book early. Overwater suites at premier resorts sell out months ahead, especially for honeymoon packages that include private dinners and spa credits.

Bora Bora vs. Moorea vs. Tahiti

Tahiti (Papeete)

Most journeys begin here. Tahiti is where you land, and many couples add a night or two on the main island before flying onward — useful for adjusting to the time zone and exploring local markets and black-sand beaches.

Moorea

A short ferry or flight from Tahiti, Moorea offers dramatic mountain scenery and excellent snorkeling at a gentler price point than Bora Bora. It is ideal for couples who want natural beauty without the ultra-luxury price tag.

Bora Bora

The iconic lagoon. This is where overwater bungalows face Mount Otemanu and glass-floor panels reveal reef fish below. Honeymooners who want the definitive Polynesian experience usually spend the majority of their stay here.

Choosing Your Resort

Not every overwater bungalow is created equal. Lagoon depth, sunset orientation, distance from the main beach, and included amenities vary widely. Some resorts cater to quiet couples; others are livelier. We match you to the right fit based on how you actually travel — not just what looks best in photos.

Through our specialist relationships, we can often secure honeymoon perks: room upgrades when available, resort credits, complimentary breakfasts, or private airport transfers that are not offered when booking direct.

Flights & Logistics

Reaching French Polynesia typically means connecting through Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Honolulu. Inter-island flights are short but must be coordinated carefully with international arrivals. We handle the full routing — air, inter-island hops, boat transfers, and resort check-in times — so nothing falls through the cracks.
